Dřeviónka in Nýdek and Church of St. Nicholas

Dřeviónka, which was built as a replica of the original homestead (timbered building No. 78 with barns, a barn and a garden), is a unique object reflecting the original life and housing of the inhabitants of Nýdec.

In the adapted premises of the former barn (formerly part of a residential building), a permanent exhibition is installed, relating to the “industrial” history of the village of Nýdek and the whole of Těšín Silesia. Visitors can learn about the original iron ore mining and the beginnings of the nearby ironworks in Ustron and Třinec. The exhibition is supplemented by rare period illustrations and contemporary photographs.

One of the examples of what church buildings in the Těšín Beskydy region looked like is the Church of St. Nicholas in Nýdek.

Today, the church has been restored to resemble its original appearance as closely as possible. The wooden shingles have returned to the roof and the base is made of natural stone as it was in the past. The story of this church is also the story of the religious movements that have marked the area. When the church was built, it was evangelical. However, like many other churches in the area, the one in Nýdek was taken away from the Protestants and became Catholic in the mid-17th century. When Emperor Joseph II issued his Toleration Patent, the vast majority of Nýdek’s inhabitants left the Catholic faith and returned to their original Protestant religion.
